Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 14th of June.
Good morning, Des Moines.
West Des Moines police are investigating a death after a woman's body was found in a vehicle early Friday, June 13 in a parking lot on the 4500 block of University Avenue near Barnes & Noble & officials confirm there is no public threat.
Central Iowa Water Works has imposed its first lawn-watering ban amid a nitrate crisis to protect water quality—customers who repeatedly break the ban could lose their water service.
The Iowa DNR said Emerson Bay Beach showed high E. coli levels from its June 11 test—dropping the list of beaches not recommended for swimming from five lakes to one.
The department collects weekly samples at 39 state-owned beaches until Labor Day.
The water utility serving 600,000 customers in the Des Moines area now bans watering lawns because high nitrate levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers are the highest since 2013—Tami Madsen, executive director of Central Iowa Water Works, said repeat violators could have their water shut off while drinking water remains safe. This step comes as the plant treats water at nine parts per million, keeping it below the safety standard of 10 parts for pregnant women and children.
The Wallace Building in Des Moines, known for its golden-glass windows and mirrored view of the Capitol dome, is set for demolition due to long-standing health and safety issues—state officials decided that a new state office building would cost far less than an $85 million renovation. The Department of Agriculture will move to the Hoover Building on July 1.
Des Moines City Council approved spending about $5 million to buy two new fire engines and a 100-foot ladder truck for the fire department from the capital improvement program so the aging fleet will be replaced.
The fire engines will be delivered after July 1, 2027 and the ladder truck after July 1, 2028—modernizing equipment for more efficient responses.
