GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The water utility serving 600,000 customers in the Des Moines area now bans watering lawns because high nitrate levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers are the highest since 2013—Tami Madsen, executive director of Central Iowa Water Works, said repeat violators could have their water shut off while drinking water remains safe. This step comes as the plant treats water at nine parts per million, keeping it below the safety standard of 10 parts for pregnant women and children.  Radio Iowa
  • The Wallace Building in Des Moines, known for its golden-glass windows and mirrored view of the Capitol dome, is set for demolition due to long-standing health and safety issues—state officials decided that a new state office building would cost far less than an $85 million renovation. The Department of Agriculture will move to the Hoover Building on July 1.  KCCI
  • Des Moines City Council approved spending about $5 million to buy two new fire engines and a 100-foot ladder truck for the fire department from the capital improvement program so the aging fleet will be replaced. The fire engines will be delivered after July 1, 2027 and the ladder truck after July 1, 2028—modernizing equipment for more efficient responses.  The Des Moines Register
