ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Red Cross reported that nearly 600 home fires have affected over 2,000 residents this year, and it is urging Iowans to check working smoke alarms as indoor activities increased during the holidays — a spike linked to winter risks.  Radio Iowa

  • The State Historical Society of Iowa is partnering with Ancestry.com to digitize nearly one million government records & enable easier family research over the next 12 to 18 months. Iowans can access the archives via a complimentary institutional account or a paid subscription.  Radio Iowa

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Monday’s Powerball drawing did not produce a jackpot winner, though over 12,000 Iowa tickets earned prizes ranging from $4 to $50,000, including a near miss at Kwik Star (Newton). Today, the jackpot is set at an estimated $1.25 billion as the Iowa Lottery gears up for the drawing.  The Des Moines Register

  • Effective today, GreenState Credit Union will stop allowing penny withdrawals by rounding cash-back totals down to the nearest dollar when cashing checks. Remaining pennies will be deposited into members' savings accounts at its nine Des Moines-area locations.  KCCI
