- ➤ The Iowa Lottery's Powerball jackpot hit $1.1 billion as ticket sales closed at 8:59 p.m. CT and the drawing took place at 9:59 p.m. CT on Monday, Dec. 15; it ranks as one of the largest prizes in the game’s history. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ A statement from the Iowa Farm Bureau said waterways are cleaner due to seasonal waterflow, but research shows nitrate and phosphate levels often exceed safe guidelines, risking baby health and cancer. - ➤ Iowa National Guard soldier Sgt. Edgar Torres-Tovar from Des Moines, who was months from homecoming, died Saturday, Dec. 13 in Syria when a lone ISIS gunman attacked his unit, and three fellow soldiers were injured with two evacuated for treatment. The Des Moines Register
