CULTURE NEWS

  • On Dec. 12, 2025, shoppers visited Principal Park for the Des Moines Christkindlmarket where they browsed holiday goods, listened to live music, and warmed up indoors by heaters on a chilly evening.  The Des Moines Register
  • Pigeon breeders gathered at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Dec. 12 to showcase their birds at the 97th annual Pigeons on the Prairie show—bringing together local and out-of-state competitors for a spirited display.  The Des Moines Register

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Iowans are set to leave in record numbers amid one of the snowiest Decembers as many plan trips to warm destinations from Dec. 20 to Jan. 1. AAA-Iowa noted higher costs for domestic flights and hotels, while gas prices have dropped to about $2.52 per gallon.  Radio Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Polk County activated its Extreme Temperature Plan at noon Friday and will keep warming centers open until noon Monday to help residents avoid dangerously low wind chills, while the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority offers free rides.  The Des Moines Register

  • Rep. Ruth Ann Gaines has represented the East Village, Union Park, and Highland Park neighborhoods since 2010 — a photo collection shows her involvement at events such as the Iowa State Fair Parade and Capitol press conferences that reflect her long career in government.  The Des Moines Register

HEALTH NEWS

  • Davis County schools cancelled classes on Friday, Dec. 12 due to a confirmed case of whooping cough, giving local families an unexpected break. Officials took the action to protect students (following strict health protocols) and reduce potential spread.  The Des Moines Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Iowa DNR forecasts wind chills of 30-below this weekend, offering ice fishing and winter sports while warning that ice may be too thin in the south for safe use. Scott Grummer said northern areas are expected to build ice, with the DNR recommending at least four inches for fishing.  Radio Iowa
