  • Diane Ohrtman avoided a dangerous electrical hazard when Embrace Iowa granted funding for urgent electrical repairs at her home. The program helps local residents get critical fixes before small issues turn into big problems.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered flags around Iowa to be lowered to half-staff today in observance of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day; flags will remain at half-staff from sunrise to sunset to honor the victims of the attack.  The Des Moines Register

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts advise residents age 45 and older to avoid shoveling snow because the strenuous work in cold weather raises blood pressure and stresses the heart. They recommend pacing, layering clothing and using a snow blower to lower the risk of a cardiac event.  The Des Moines Register

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • New Realtor.com data shows that Polk County’s median home sale price rose from $270,000 in August to $280,000 in September—a 3.7% increase—as recorded sales climbed 8.2% to 766, totaling $232.4 million. The figures also reflect steady gains in single-family and townhome markets.  The Des Moines Register

  • Iowa State announced that longtime head coach Matt Campbell is leaving for Penn State and 38-year-old Jimmy Rogers has signed a six-year deal to lead the Cyclones. Rogers led South Dakota State to a national championship and previously coached Washington State.  Radio Iowa
