- ➤ Pagliai's Pizza in Johnston reopened today at 4 p.m. five days after a truck crashed into the building, injuring two people, and security footage shows a family dining near a window when the pickup broke through the brick wall & the driver has been charged with OWI. KCCI
- ➤ A crash on I-235 near 31st Street in the eastbound lane occurred just before noon and is slowing mid-day traffic in Des Moines as the Iowa DOT said the inside shoulder is blocked & vehicles have moved to the outside shoulder. KCCI

- ➤ Local readers have named their top 10 stores they want to see open in the metro for the holiday season. The survey shows consumer preferences for new retail options in the area. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ The U.S. Mint stopped making pennies Wednesday, so businesses in Iowa like Kwik Star now round down cash purchases, meaning a $7.37 bill becomes $7.35 instead. The policy will soon take effect in Iowa locations—Kwik Star says it will cost the company $3 million this year, and banks advise customers to recycle their coins. KCCI
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ More than 20 employers — including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Jersey Mike’s and the U.S. Postal Service — met with over 300 job seekers on Thursday at Southridge Mall during the St. Vincent de Paul Career Fair. Officials said that many attendees were eager to return to work ahead of the holidays and noted that a second career fair focusing on construction jobs is planned for February. KCCI
- ➤ The last penny was produced on Wednesday in Pennsylvania—ending over 230 years of minting—and officials said it costs 4 cents to make each coin, a change that will save about $56 million a year. Iowa banks and merchants now may round cash transactions to the nearest nickel as pennies become scarcer. WHO 13

- ➤ Ames native David Cook addressed the media on Nov. 11 in Ames—just minutes after being named Iowa State’s new president. He will lead the university as he steps into his role following the announcement. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Iowa hunters reported over 22,000 deer harvested this fall, roughly 3% above last season and the five-year average — Pete Hildreth from Iowa DNR noted that Clayton County led with 799 deer while Ida County had only five. About 100,000 hunters are set for the planned gun season on December 6-10. Radio Iowa

- ➤ A lottery ticket sold at Kwik Star on Chatham Ave in Norwalk won $3 million in the Nov. 11 Mega Millions drawing by matching the first five numbers—missing the Mega Ball by one. The Des Moines Register
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State officials said all eligible Iowa households will likely receive full SNAP benefits for November by tomorrow after a federal shutdown ended+ some recipients may access assistance as early as today. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services advised calling the number on the EBT card to verify available funds. Radio Iowa
- ➤ Today, the Iowa Board of Regents tabled a vote on the proposed bylaws for the University of Iowa Center for Intellectual Freedom because regents raised concerns about committee eligibility and potential out-of-state influence. The center’s advisory council — set to meet on Nov. 18 — will discuss the guidelines further before next steps are decided. KCCI
- ➤ Food aid advocates delivered a petition with 600 signatures to Gov. Kim Reynolds on Nov 12, urging the state to join the Summer EBT program in 2026 so that $29.4 million in federal funds is not lost. They say the program would serve 245,000 children statewide—far more than the current Healthy Kids Iowa pilot, prompting calls for a change in state policy. The Des Moines Register
