COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Oct 29, 2025, nearly 40 fruit trees were planted by volunteers at Drake Park as part of a new community orchard in Des Moines that aims to improve local food access and foster neighborhood ties. City officials plan to add signage and partner with Trees Forever to maintain the orchard as the trees mature—an effort that will benefit local food resources over time. KCCI
- ➤ Girls on the Run wrapped up its season with a 5K celebration run at Principal Park in downtown Des Moines where over 1,400 participants either ran or walked—helping to donate non-perishable food to the Food Bank of Iowa. The program’s eight week course had engaged 650 girls who met with coaches twice per week—building strength and self-worth. WHO 13
- ➤ In Des Moines, part of the Principal Riverwalk Trail will be closed for utility work starting Tuesday — trail users must take a detour between the Grand Avenue Bridge and the Women of Achievement Bridge as the section reopens on Nov 28. KCCI
- ➤ Des Moines City Council approved a $145,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to replace decades-old playground equipment at Cheatom Park (1100 Day St.), a park serving over 2,600 residents within a 10-minute walk. The new playground for children (2 to 12) will feature slides, a swing set, an accessible ramp and picnic tables with construction expected to start in 2026. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ A new display of historic Des Moines buildings and homes shows how the city grew from the 1840s to the mid-1900s—featuring sites such as Thompson Place, the early water tower, and repurposed community structures that once served as centers of business and social life.
