COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Downtown Farmers’ Market — presented by UnityPoint Health — wraps up its 50th season from 8 a.m. to Noon as marketgoers shop for late-season produce and enjoy trick or treating in costume. The Downtown Winter Farmers’ Market—presented by Prairie Meadows—will start on Nov. 21 with indoor shopping and holiday crafts.  Downtown Des Moines

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A barn was destroyed by a large fire on October 24th in the 4600 block of Highway T22 South near Newton—firefighters reported the 100-by-80 hay barn with about 150 hay bales burned completely while no injuries occurred and an investigation is ongoing.  WHO 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Greater Des Moines Partnership announced that bestselling author Jon Gordon will serve as keynote at its 2026 Annual Dinner on Jan 22 at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center in Downtown Des Moines. The event will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. and include a presentation of the Annual Report and updates on strategic priorities to set the tone for the coming year.  Downtown Des Moines
  • Ames' Danfoss Power Solutions began construction on a 16,000 square foot childcare center in partnership with Everbrook Academy yesterday—this new facility will provide care for up to 160 children from company employees and other local families and is expected to be completed next year.  KCCI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered flags to be flown at half-staff today in Iowa to honor Sen. Claire Celsi, who died Oct 6 after battling illness. The flags will remain lowered from sunrise to sunset, and a memorial service will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Valley High School cafeteria in West Des Moines — a mark of respect for her service.  The Des Moines Register
  • A judge ruled on Oct 23 that the Iowa State Historical Society must stop moving important records and artifacts from its Iowa City research center after work began on Oct 6 to shift 40% of the collection to Des Moines before a planned 2026 closure. A lawsuit filed by local residents said the removals risked harm to our history & halted further transfers until the court reviews the case.  The Des Moines Register
