Good morning, Des Moines. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 21st of October.
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A national outage of Amazon Web Services that began after midnight on Oct 20 has affected thousands of users—including those in central Iowa where over 5,000 reported issues with the Canvas site used by Iowa Regent universities—and disrupted apps like Snapchat and Reddit. Amazon is working on recovery efforts, but it remains unclear when services will be fully restored. The Des Moines Register
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Ingersoll Dinner Theater—a local treasure closed for over a decade—is delaying its reopening because supply chain issues have slowed construction. Although the plan was to open in November, the first shows will take place on December 31 and new acts, including comedy, live music and children’s programs, are set for early next year. WHO 13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fifty thousand Iowa kids under age five may lose crucial food support from the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC) if the shutdown persists; funding expires (October 31) if lawmakers do not reach a budget deal. Iowa Starting Line
- ➤ A reporter from the Des Moines Register took the city's snowplow driving course at the supply yard to learn the techniques that over 200 Public Works employees use to clear 2,200 lane miles of streets in winter. He struggled with hitting barrels and spinners on the oval track and learned that taking it slow is key to safe snow removal — the test shows the work behind keeping our streets clear. - ➤ Iowa law prohibits selling margarine as butter by requiring products labeled as oleo, oleomargarine, or margarine to list all ingredients and forbidding their misrepresentation as dairy; violators face fines (between $105 and $855) and up to 30 days in prison.
