- ➤ Courtney Petersen, a 44-year-old competitive cyclist known as Corey, died last Thursday morning when a dump truck struck her at a dangerous intersection on High Trestle Trail near the 12100 block of Northwest 44th Street—her family now urges safety changes to help prevent future accidents. BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa Angel Investor Summit will be held on Nov. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Krause Gateway Center in Downtown Des Moines, where investors, entrepreneurs and business leaders will network and pitch ideas in Iowa’s growing startup scene. A pre-summit workshop on Nov. 17 at the C3 Center will offer fundamentals of angel investing — registration costs $50 and is limited to 150 participants. Downtown Des Moines

- ➤ Des Moines School Board member Maria Alonzo is seeking re-election for an at-large seat as early voting began yesterday, and she defends her past vote to hire former superintendent Ian Roberts, who was arrested on September 26. - ➤ Thai Theodoro, a student at Grinnell College from Brazil, is working as the fall intern at the Des Moines Register and has covered local news like the opening of a mosque in Granger+ he is set to report on the November elections to boost his political science studies. The Des Moines Register
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A portion of Hickman Road under the overpass was closed until midnight Wednesday as work continued on a $94 million project to add lanes and reduce crashes on I-80/35. The DOT said the next major closure is scheduled overnight October 24—25 so drivers should check Iowa 511 for updates. KCCI
- ➤ A federal investigation into Des Moines Public Schools' employment practices is on hold because of the government shutdown, according to interim superintendent Matt Smith — the Department of Justice sent a letter last month and has offered no update on resuming the probe. KCCI

- ➤ Woodward-Granger football will face the Cardinals on Friday in a game that may secure a district crown if Van Meter loses, building on a strong defense that has held opponents to low scores this season — Perry’s Jayettes volleyball earned a win streak with wins over several teams and will host Winterset on Oct. 21, while Perry football aims to finish their season at home with running back Nadir Ouahbi nearing a 1,000-yard milestone.
