- ➤ Yoni Diller, a 30-year-old survivor of the October 7 attacks in Israel — who walked nearly five hours to escape a Hamas attack on a music festival that killed over 400 — spoke last night in Des Moines at an Iowans Supporting Israel event and said real healing will begin only when the hostages return home. - ➤ Iowa native Erin Becker, the author of 'Crushing It'—a middle grade story about two girls whose soccer rivalry mixes with personal feelings—spoke at the Banned Books Festival at the Franklin Event Center on Oct. 10 amid debates on recent school book laws. - ➤ Sarah Scull shared her journey from dropping out at 15, facing challenges like undiagnosed ADHD and bullying, to becoming a full-time HiSET instructor who helps struggling students find hope—she told her story on Sept. 9 as part of the Tell It Like It Is: Iowa Storytellers Project, and a future event will be held on Feb. 10 under the theme 'Hearts on Fire'.
