  • The Des Moines Register announced a partnership with AI-powered search engine Perplexity to provide accurate local news—this deal licenses trusted USA TODAY Network content to the new Comet web browser and will support local journalism with additional revenue.  The Des Moines Register

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Multiple fire departments and local teams battled a field fire in rural Dallas County Friday afternoon near Dallas Center. Witnesses said a combine caught fire and local farmers built fire breaks—stopping the flames from spreading further.  WHO 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Des Moines Public Schools has named veteran educator Matt Smith as interim superintendent after Ian Roberts was arrested for immigration violations—Smith will serve under a two-year contract through the 2026–27 school year. He previously held the position and now must rebuild community trust while the district faces challenges including a $265 million bond vote on November 4.  The Des Moines Register

  • At Living History Farms in Urbandale on Oct 10, new citizens took the US Citizenship Oath of Allegiance & Governor Kim Reynolds attended the ceremony.  The Des Moines Register

HEALTH NEWS

  • Food and nutrition advocates warned that a prolonged government shutdown could cut food assistance for low-income mothers, babies and young children in the WIC program — over 60,000 participate and the National WIC Association said federal funds may last only about another week. Iowa WIC is operating normally with USDA contingency funding, but the group urged Congress to resolve the funding uncertainty soon.  Iowa Public Radio
