COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Greater Des Moines Partnership and Grinnell College will host a Community Building Roundtable on November 5 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Weingart Civic Innovation Pavilion in Grinnell—this free event will feature a panel of community leaders and a tour that offers actionable ideas for building stronger local connections.  Downtown Des Moines

CRIME NEWS

  • After being arrested by ICE last month, Des Moines Schools superintendent Ian Roberts requested emergency board approval for $116,000 in contracts for culturally responsive coaching—one contract tied him to Lively Paradox where he was also a consultant—and officials then canceled the meeting after conflict of interest concerns emerged.  The Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Des Moines School Board approved a two-year contract for Matt Smith as interim superintendent — a move aimed at bringing stability to the district until the 2026-2027 school year — after former superintendent Ian Roberts resigned amid federal charges. Smith — who played a key role in the Reimagining Education plan — now leads the district as it prepares a $265 million bond referendum in November.  WHO 13
  • Des Moines Public Schools is suing JG Consulting after records show the firm tied to former superintendent Ian Roberts was hired despite conflict-of-interest concerns. The board said the firm did not check candidate records well and is taking steps to protect taxpayer money—an action that may change future hiring.  KCCI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Natural Resources said fall colors are delayed in Iowa due to warm autumn temperatures, with Northern Iowa now expected to peak in the second week of October—Central Iowa in the third week and Southern Iowa in the last week. Chip Murrow added that factors like daylight, rainfall and early frost are also affecting the display.  WHO 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa DOT is preparing to permanently close the intersection where Highway 141 meets Northwest Towner Drive in Grimes starting Monday as part of a plan to prevent crashes—drivers can still access Highway 141 via Northwest 121st Street.  KCCI
  • Construction is underway at Des Moines International Airport as workers build a new terminal just north of the current one to open early 2027. The project will add a skywalk from the parking garage to the terminal–a bridge linking it to the old concourse–and a new de-icing pad to handle more flights and travelers.  WHO 13
  • Gov. Kim Reynolds set a special election for Dec. 30 to fill West Des Moines Iowa Senate District 16 after Sen. Claire Celsi died on Oct. 7 from undisclosed health challenges.  The Des Moines Register

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tim Faucz faces daily challenges with ALS, having adjusted his home with his wife after a delayed diagnosis and unnecessary surgery — he works hard on walking and breathing while urging others not to take life for granted. The couple invites the community to join Team Tim for the Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday, Oct. 11th at 10 a.m. at Prairie Meadows to support research and care services.  KCCI
