- ➤ Polk County Sheriff's Office invites families to join the candy crawl at the Grimes Fall Festival on Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grimes South Sports Complex — vendors, food trucks and a sensory-friendly slot from 10 to 10:30 a.m. add extra fun for all ages. KCCI
- ➤ On Saturday, Final Salute held a full military burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Waukee that honored the unclaimed remains of 13 Iowa veterans from World War I through Vietnam, with hundreds of community members, bikers, veterans groups, and elected officials paying tribute. The ceremony brought the total number of unclaimed veterans laid to rest to 84—across seven services, ensuring their service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. KCCI

- ➤ Sir Paul McCartney will perform on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Casey’s Center in Des Moines as part of his ongoing Got Back tour—the 83 year old rock legend will deliver a two hour 40 minute set featuring Beatles classics and lesser-heard solo tunes with ticket prices ranging from $58.43 to $500.85. - ➤ Local Iowa filmmakers Evan Runkle and Alix Moad will show their comedy-horror film Field of Screams, which features a killer scarecrow, at the Halloweenapalooza Horror Film Fest in Ottumwa on Saturday, October 11th at 6 p.m.—they will introduce the film and hold a Q&A after the screening. - ➤ DMPS Superintendent Ian Roberts was arrested by ICE on charges of illegal presence and a federal firearms offense, and in the wake of his arrest candidates Marcus Coenen and Sara Hopkins criticized the board’s hiring process—urging a more transparent approach as the district prepares for the November 4 school board election and supports a $265 million bond referendum. This discussion comes as candidates seek to refocus the district on quality education for students and a supportive work environment for staff. WHO 13

- ➤ Collecting rainwater is legal in Iowa because no law prohibits this practice, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources + the Iowa Stormwater Education Partnership provide guidance on using rain barrels and other methods to conserve water while some Des Moines cities offer rebates for conservation efforts. - ➤ A Legislative Services Agency report shows that state revenues dropped 8.4% in FY 2025 and are projected to fall another 5% in FY 2026 — tax changes like a flat 3.8% income rate and business deductions played a role — and State Auditor Rob Sand warned that these trends may lead to a record deficit. - ➤ UnityPoint postponed the union vote for about 2,000 nurses because the National Labor Relations Board closed due to the federal government shutdown that began Sept 30th. Nurses organized by Teamsters Local 90 said they will vote when Congress passes a budget & the board reopens. KCCI
- ➤ Iowa Senate member Claire Celsi (a strong supporter of public education) died October 6 after representing District 16 in West Des Moines, Clive and Windsor Heights. Gov. - ➤ Farms in Iowa may see more federal immigration officers in the coming months—legal expert Kristiana Coutu at Iowa State University advised farmers to prepare by naming a point person and marking non-public areas.
