COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Silverstar Car Wash on Hickman Road in Windsor Heights is turning its facility into a Halloween haunted tunnel that features eerie lighting—spooky sound effects and costumed characters draw visitors. Admission is $25 per vehicle and 10% of proceeds will benefit Windsor Heights Elementary School, with the tunnel open nightly from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. until October ends.  KCCI
  • The Des Moines Forestry Division is now accepting entries for its annual fall tree photo contest with submissions due through the end of October—the winner will have a tree planted in a public space of their choosing following a public vote.  KCCI

CRIME NEWS

  • A Des Moines teen missing since July 12 was found safe on Oct. 2 after her case was featured in a statewide billboard campaign — police say she is healthy while investigations continue.  The Des Moines Register
  • Former Des Moines schools superintendent Ian Roberts is no longer held in Woodbury County Jail—he was arrested last Friday by ICE on a federal warrant, and after protests and barricades outside the facility, his name was removed from the jail roster.  The Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, the Des Moines Public Schools board meets at 8 a.m. at 2100 Fleur Drive to explore legal options over Ian Roberts’ hiring after his arrest, misrepresented qualifications, and allegations of possessing firearms — Millcreek Township School District in Erie is also considering legal action against Roberts for a breach of trust.  The Des Moines Register

  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds appointed Mark Campbell as head of the Department of Administrative Services, effective Oct. 6—Campbell will lead the department after Adam Steen resigned in August to launch his campaign for governor.  The Gazette

  • The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the USDA reported that bird flu was detected in a commercial turkey flock in Calhoun County — marking the eighth H5N1 detection in domestic birds this year.  WHO 13
