- ➤ Attorneys for Dr. Ian Roberts, the Des Moines Public Schools superintendent arrested by immigration officials last week, held a news conference Tuesday and said he will resign today—a motion to reopen his immigration case will be presented to the school board. KCCI
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UI education professor Kari Vogelgesang said a new DOE report shows Iowa chronic absenteeism dropped five percent—from about 26 percent after COVID to around 15-16 percent—since a state law took effect, though she warned that tailored, non-punitive policies are needed to further support students. This drop is one of the largest in the country and raises hopes for more focused improvements in school climate. Radio Iowa

- ➤ The U.S. Department of Justice began an investigation into Des Moines Public Schools to review allegations it had set race-based hiring quotas—this comes after Superintendent Roberts was detained by ICE and resigned due to lacking work authorization. The probe will check if the district’s DEI policies violated federal employment law. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Des Moines City Council passed the first reading of changes to its prohibited camping ordinance Monday night to clear up enforcement rules and service connections. The council will use a one-time $300,000 cash reserve and assign police to support Central Iowa Shelter and Services in adding both shared and private rooms—steps aimed at helping people living outdoors.
