- ➤ The Hola Center will host its fourth annual gala on Friday, October 3 at 6 p.m. at Loft DSM to support resource services for the Latino community—Cinthia Naranjo is set to emcee the event, which will help fund the organization’s outreach programs. WHO 13
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Frank Fritz’s estate remains in legal limbo as his father Bill Fritz and close friends dispute his last will—leaving longtime friend Annette Oberlander Willows unable to move on until he is properly laid to rest. The probate trial is set for November 2026 and details of his nearly $6 million estate remain sealed. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Thousands attended the Iowa Latino Heritage Festival at Western Gateway Park in downtown Des Moines over the weekend—people enjoyed games, inflatables, stage shows and food vendors, and the event celebrated Latino culture while welcoming all who wanted to learn about its traditions. WHO 13
- ➤ Es-Selam Mosque in Granger held its grand opening on Sept. 27, where community members prayed—local official Mayor Tony James and former Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad addressed the crowd during the ceremony. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ District officials said Superintendent Ian Roberts filled out his I-9 form and underwent a comprehensive background check by Baker-Eubanks, which did not verify his legal work eligibility. The school board and the state Department of Education are reviewing the hiring process after officials said they were unaware of his May 2024 deportation order—resulting in his placement on paid administrative leave.
