Iowa Asian Alliance announced on Sept 26 that it will build a spirit house on Robert D.

Ray Drive and Grand Avenue to honor Southeast Asian families who came to Iowa after the Vietnam War through the efforts of the late Gov. Robert D. Ray. The project will include planting 50 trees by families from Cambodian, Hmong, Laos, Vietnamese and Thai communities to commemorate 50 years of resettlement.

The Des Moines School Board met Saturday, Sept.

27 at 5 p.m. to address superintendent Ian Roberts’ immigration-related arrest and his administrative leave status in closed session—appointing Associate Superintendent Matt Smith as interim leader.

Over 1,500 participants took part in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Principal Park in downtown Des Moines, raising more than $282,000 for research and support for those with the disease.

Participants carried colored promise garden flowers to show their ties to the cause — the Alzheimer’s Association is still working to meet its fundraising goal.
