COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Iowa Asian Alliance announced on Sept 26 that it will build a spirit house on Robert D. Ray Drive and Grand Avenue to honor Southeast Asian families who came to Iowa after the Vietnam War through the efforts of the late Gov. Robert D. Ray. The project will include planting 50 trees by families from Cambodian, Hmong, Laos, Vietnamese and Thai communities to commemorate 50 years of resettlement.  The Des Moines Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Des Moines School Board met Saturday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. to address superintendent Ian Roberts’ immigration-related arrest and his administrative leave status in closed session—appointing Associate Superintendent Matt Smith as interim leader.  The Des Moines Register

HEALTH NEWS

  • Over 1,500 participants took part in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Principal Park in downtown Des Moines, raising more than $282,000 for research and support for those with the disease. Participants carried colored promise garden flowers to show their ties to the cause — the Alzheimer’s Association is still working to meet its fundraising goal.  WHO 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Indiana defeated Iowa 20—15 at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday in a 60-minute game that marked Indiana’s first win over the Hawkeyes since 2007. Iowa, now 3—2 overall, will aim to improve before its next home game on Oct. 18 as Coach Kirk Ferentz said the team plans to work harder.  The Gazette
  • Indiana won 20-15 over Iowa on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium when a 49-yard touchdown pass by Fernando Mendoza to Elijah Surratt broke a tie with 1:29 left in the game—giving the Hoosiers the win.  The Gazette
