- ➤ Nearly 9,000 MidAmerican Energy Co. customers lost power yesterday afternoon in Des Moines as outage maps showed 11 outages affecting 8,690 customers at 2:25 p.m.—the company said it is working to restore service. KCCI
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ John Deere announced it will cut 141 jobs at its Waterloo and Ankeny plants amid a struggling farm economy, with 101 workers in Waterloo set to be laid off on Oct. 17, 71 from a Waterloo foundry on Friday, and 40 in Ankeny to be cut on Oct. 31—affected employees will receive supplemental unemployment benefits and health care aid. - ➤ More than 350 business leaders met Wednesday at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines for the Greater Des Moines Partnership Regional Summit to discuss strategies for regional growth in sectors like advanced manufacturing and logistics plus local leaders including Gov. Kim Reynolds and Mayor Connie Boesen joined keynote speaker James Chung to stress the need for collaboration. Organizers reported almost 100 more attendees than last year and promised further opportunities for building regional partnerships. KCCI

- ➤ Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin will perform at Casey’s Center on Tuesday, Sept. 23 — the show starts at 7 p.m. with special guest Return to Dust, and frontman Adam Gontier returns after a 12-year break to bring renewed energy to the band’s classic hits. The Gazette

- ➤ After falling from his nest at Wells Fargo's campus in June, rescued baby osprey Fargo underwent three months of rehab and was released in Jester Park on Sept. 12 — he is now free in the wild. The Des Moines Register
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa DOGE Task Force met Monday in Des Moines and recommended that teachers receive bonuses up to 10% for improved student achievement and that new public employees be given an opt-out option for the retirement program—further details will be compiled in a report due by Sept. 29—while assuring that current benefits remain intact. - ➤ The Iowa Board of Regents met this morning in closed session and voted to give three state universities two weeks to investigate employees who allegedly posted online comments cheering Charlie Kirk's death — university presidents can take immediate action, including placing employees on leave or termination, if violations are confirmed. - ➤ The Iowa Board of Regents recommended approving a 26-member advisory board for the University of Iowa’s new center for intellectual freedom—mandated by spring legislation—with Regent Christine Hensley slated to chair the group. Some regents and public commenters raised concerns over the board’s political balance and the inclusion of many out-of-state members, and detailed policies will be developed soon. KCCI
- ➤ The University of Northern Iowa will open the Chuck and Barbara Grassley Center on the Cedar Falls campus next year to serve as a hub for civic education and research—Senator Grassley, who turned 92 today, has donated many boxes of his documents and UNI has already hired a director for the center.
