- ➤ Hundreds of mourners gathered in West Des Moines on Sept. 12 to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk who was fatally shot at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 and police charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinsin with aggravated murder—attendees lit candles while speakers, including his widow, urged supporters to keep his legacy alive. - ➤ Des Moines International Airport tied its record high of 96°F on Sept. 13 by matching temperatures set in 1897, 1931, and 1939. The reading was nearly 18°F above the average 78°F and stands as the second hottest day recorded in 2025 + the unusual September heat points to a changing climate in central Iowa. KCCI
- ➤ Monarch butterflies are stopping at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge during their long migration from Canada to Mexico, and workers tag them to collect travel data (the tag is a small dot that does not affect flight). On Saturday, visitors joined staff during Monarch Madness to help tag and release the butterflies as retired coordinator Tenlea Turner shared her unique experiences. WHO 13
