COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 2,000 customers in central Iowa were without power in the Johnston area — the outage started at 7:53 a.m. Monday — and MidAmerican Energy Company said power would be restored by 9:30 a.m.  KCCI

CULTURE NEWS

  • The African American Museum of Iowa will host its annual History Makers Gala on Thursday, Oct. 2 at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center — the event will honor Dr. Michael Blackwell, Renee Dunn, Ricki King, and Nolden Gentry with a reception at 5 p.m. and a program at 6 p.m.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Des Moines City Council approved an urban renewal plan for the Riverview Park area that will replace blighted properties with new shops, offices and homes over 59 acres. The plan includes a $7 million row house project of 36 townhomes replacing an old warehouse—city officials said the project will boost local growth.  KCCI
  • Today, U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins visited the Central Iowa Health Care Center in Des Moines and said officials must act quickly to improve the system by making better decisions on hiring and spending—efforts meant to give veterans faster care.  Radio Iowa
  • Former state Rep. Joe Mitchell from Clear Lake announced his campaign for Congress in Iowa’s 2nd District after Ashley Hinson launched her Senate run—he will step down from his current HUD role to focus on the race covering 22 counties including Cedar Rapids and Dubuque.  The Des Moines Register
  • The Iowa Department of Agriculture will continue its Choose Iowa Farms to Food Banks program by directing $200,000 to six food banks so they can buy fresh local food from nearby producers+ the program has already helped stock healthy food choices for many Iowans facing food insecurity.  Radio Iowa

  • The Harlem Globetrotters will start a 100 Year Tour next year with four stops in Iowa—at the Casey’s Center in Des Moines on February 12th, at Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids on February 13th, at Dubuque’s Five Flags Center on Valentine’s Day, and at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. This tour celebrates the centennial of a team that plays over 400 games a year around the world.  Radio Iowa
