ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sept 5, a 4-year-old child who did not need hospital care and a 12-year-old child taken to UnityPoint Health Blank Children's Hospital were struck by cars in separate incidents in Des Moines—police investigated the crashes and urged drivers to slow down near schools as high school football games took place Friday night.  The Des Moines Register

  • The Des Moines Metro Opera was founded in 1973 by Robert Larsen in Indianola and has grown from a small-town production to a nationally recognized festival. EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Sept. 4, the Southeast Polk school board approved a $51M bond that will build a new elementary school for 750 students—and upgrade playgrounds and move the junior high office for better safety. Voters will decide the measure on Nov. 4, and no tax increase is needed due to the current rate of $15.42 per $1,000 in property value.  The Des Moines Register

  • U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson began her Senate campaign with a stop in West Des Moines on Sept. 5—one of 99 counties visited on her tour to gain support for her bid.  The Des Moines Register
  • Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird and Meskwaki Nation Tribal Chairman Vern Jefferson signed an agreement at the Hoover Building on Sept. 4 that lets tribal officers and state patrol cross each other's boundaries during fresh pursuit to keep drivers accountable—this measure addresses past issues with jurisdiction that led to cases being dismissed.  The Des Moines Register

  • Woodward’s Hawks won a 28-21 game over Madrid Friday as Talan Fuson ran for 205 yards and scored four touchdowns — including a 46-yard run. Woodward-Granger’s boys cross country team won their season opener at Jester Park Tuesday with all finishers placing in the top 30.  The Des Moines Register
