CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A shooting happened early Thursday morning in an apartment at Maple Grove Villas — police received a call at 3:14 a.m. and one person was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening injury — while officers continue to investigate the incident. WHO 13
- ➤ Des Moines police arrested three teenagers on first-degree robbery charges for allegedly robbing a 20-year-old man during an online sale meet-up on Sept. 3 in the 2800 block of East 50th Street—another teen remains unidentified and faces additional charges related to interference with official acts. - ➤ A 20-year-old selling clothes online in Des Moines was robbed at gunpoint on September 4 during a 10 p.m. meeting when four men — two of whom were armed — attacked him, prompting police to later stop an Uber carrying three suspects and arrest two teenage suspects while one remains on the run as a rifle was recovered. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Polk County held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 3 at the new election office in Des Moines—replacing its old location on Second and Court Avenue. Local officials led a tour of the secure facility that houses new ballot machines and a fireproof ballot drop box. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Polk County moved its election office to the River Place building at 2309 Euclid Ave on Des Moines’ north side, replacing its cramped, outdated downtown site after concerns about voter safety—its new facility, unveiled on Sept. 3, features increased capacity with more check-in stations, secure ballot storage and ample parking with direct access to a DART bus line. - ➤ Governor Kim Reynolds has granted 55 pardons from 2019 to 2023—more than twice as many as former Governor Terry Branstad issued during a similar period. She has not commuted any sentences since taking office. The Gazette
- ➤ The U.S. General Services Agency announced Thursday it completed the sale of the former federal courthouse at 123 E. Walnut St. to a real estate investment group led by Brian Seidensticker for $2.6 million. Officials said renovating the building would have taken a decade and cost taxpayers more than $27 million—making the sale a fiscally sound decision—while Des Moines opened its new federal courthouse earlier this year. - ➤ DART is proposing to reduce metro bus routes from 27 to 10 and cut service hours by 10% to give more frequent rides in busy areas—a move designed to address a $6.7 million shortfall expected by fiscal year 2027. The transit agency will hold nine public meetings this month and adopt a finalized plan in December with changes starting next summer. Iowa Public Radio
