EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At DCG boys cross country practice today, head coach Matt Pries led the team in spending 30 minutes on their mission statement—Dedication, Compassion, and Guts—before they began running. Ranked sixth in Class 4A as of Aug. 18, the Mustangs started their season on Aug. 26 at the DMACC campus in Ankeny. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Des Moines Prep, the city’s first public charter high school, opened this week in a historic 90-year-old building on Southwest Sixth near MLK Parkway. The school focuses on college and corporate readiness and now serves 120 students with room to expand to over 600. KCCI
- ➤ Iowa United's new basketball campus on the city's south side is drawing national attention after YouTuber All Hail Cullen toured its renovated 73,000-square-foot warehouse with courts and locker rooms. The school held its first practice Tuesday and will start classes next week as it expects 50 college coaches to visit early September — a move that could boost opportunities for the 24 full scholarship athletes —. - ➤ After switching to a four day school week, Saydel Community School District saw eight-year-old Jayce Moody improve his behavior and test scores—helping him focus better while teachers plan lessons. The Iowa Department of Education reported that 27 districts now use a four day schedule for the 2025 to 2026 school year. Iowa Public Radio
- ➤ Des Moines Public Schools are collecting signatures for a $265 million bond referendum that will appear on the November ballot to fund new education projects. Volunteers are gathering 7,434 signatures by September 19—so far, 3,750 signatures have been collected to help offset lost state funding from declining enrollment. WHO 13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Several Iowa cities are receiving multi-million-dollar settlements from chemical companies for PFAS contamination in drinking water. Des Moines will get a $10-million check and West Des Moines will receive over $3-million from major firms—other cities like Dubuque and Sioux City also expect payouts as testing since 2020 showed levels above federal guidelines. - ➤ The Iowa DNR announced that two federally endangered pallid sturgeons were found this spring in the lower Des Moines River near Ottumwa—collected at the end of April and first week of May during their annual sampling, both fish were healthy, naturally produced, and released after tissue samples were taken.
