CULTURE NEWS

  • Iowa Columnist Courtney Crowder shared 12 fair stories that cover local traditions and new contests at the Iowa State Fair, showcasing innovations from Blue Ribbon canning to dessert trends — each report highlights record attendance and fresh event features.  The Des Moines Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • FIRE reported that none of Iowa’s four reviewed schools earned a green free speech rating—Grinnell College received a red light while Iowa State, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa earned yellow ratings for policies seen as limiting student expression. The Iowa Board of Regents has revised rules to better balance academic freedom with protections against bias.  The Des Moines Register
  • Community members are working to preserve historic artwork at Des Moines Public Schools, including a mural at Roosevelt High School seen on June 18. The school was built in 1923—an important part of our local heritage.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Des Moines Fire Department Chief John TeKippe announced that after serving as chief for 16 years he will retire on December 22 — his 32 years of service include key improvements in fire services and the city has begun a national search for his replacement.  WHO 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a scrimmage with Des Moines East on Aug. 22, head coach Scott Heitland said the Mustangs are excited about moving from Class 4A to 5A and will open their regular season in Urbandale. He said the team—led by returning quarterback Chase Engel and tight end Jackson Reis—is set to face tougher metro competition with greater discipline.  The Des Moines Register
  • Van Meter coach Eric Trudo said the Bulldogs will push for a fourth state title in five years as they work through roster changes and a contest for the quarterback spot. The team will play at Des Moines Christian on Aug. 29—hoping to build on past success.  The Des Moines Register
