- ➤ Brian Junge of Des Moines Karaoke and DJ Service was sued for trademark infringement by Georgia-based DJ Trivia over his use of names like Video DJ Trivia and VJ Bingo, which the company said were confusingly similar to its registered marks. The lawsuit alleges unfair competition and seeks up to triple damages and all profits—Junge argues that adding 'video' makes his marks distinct and claims he never received proper legal notice before the suit. - ➤ Crews began recovery attempts Monday morning to retrieve a body found in the Des Moines River Sunday night near the Women of Achievement Bridge—police are investigating a possible connection to a call on August 10th. WHO 13
- ➤ The Des Moines Fire Department recovered a dead body from the Des Moines River near the Women of Achievement Bridge on Aug. 18th after fast-flowing water delayed the recovery—medical examiners and police are now investigating the scene. The Des Moines Register
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 2025 Iowa State Fair drew 1,160,121 visitors and, though attendance was 22,561 fewer than in 2024, it remains one of the highest attended with a record 131,755 in the grandstand. Kidz Bop attracted 3,335 fans and Waterloo's Aleesha Smith won the Bill Riley Talent Search on the final day, Aug. 17—highlighting the fair's diverse attractions. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Des Moines Public School District approved a cell phone policy in the spring after testing it at Hoover High School—high schools require phones to be hidden during class while middle and elementary schools keep them stored all day. Parents must call school offices for emergencies and the district will soon add artificial intelligence to enhance classroom communication—exceptions apply for emergencies and special cases. WHO 13
- ➤ Directors of the Head Start preschool program for low-income families awaited guidance on a new federal rule that requires proof of legal status for enrollment—Lisa Proctor of Drake University said the change might reduce the number of families that sign up and lower funding for a program serving around 1000 children.
