Good morning, Des Moines. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 12th of August.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Iowa State Fair butter sculptures are now complete and feature the Butter Cow along with Toy Story characters in four scenes that mark the 30th anniversary of the film and the 100th Fiddle Contest anniversary — a project led by long-time sculptor Sarah Pratt and her team, including her son Dean. Visitors can view the displays each day at 9 a.m. in the Agriculture Building.  WHO 13
  • Golden K Dog from Raleigh debuted Korean-style corn dogs at the Iowa State Fair today; the vendor offers a hot dog made with half-mozzarella and half-beef that is dipped in a two-day batter, coated in crinkle-cut fries and panko—then deep-fried and served with spicy sauce.  The Des Moines Register
  • At the Iowa State Fair on Aug. 7, a new adaptive playground for children with disabilities was unveiled in Des Moines—Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer helped open the facility during the fair's opening ceremonies. Families and visitors have since enjoyed the accessible play space as part of the fair's activities.  The Des Moines Register
  • The Iowa State Fair butter cow — a familiar fair draw — will be on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. starting next week as part of the State Fairs: Growing American Craft exhibit, which opens Friday, August 22nd and runs until September 7th with a grand opening celebration on September 18th; butter sculptor Sarah Pratt said curators visited the fair two years ago and later asked her to create the piece for the exhibit.  WHO 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Board of Regents meets to vote on a policy that requires grades at Iowa’s public universities to reflect mastery of course content—rather than agreement with specific viewpoints. Representative Taylor Collins said that if the 2024 anti-DEI law is not clearly enforced this fall, his committee will revisit the issue in January.  Radio Iowa

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • At the Iowa State Fair, Campbell’s Corn Dogs & Lemonade serves pickle lemonade—a mix of tart lemonade with two pickle chips and pickle juice—that brings a salty twist to a classic drink. The beverage is available for $6 at several stands on the fairgrounds and is inspired by the popular pickle pizza offered there.  The Des Moines Register
