- ➤ An Iowa family is suing an online gaming company after a 13-year-old girl was kidnapped from her grandmother’s home in West Des Moines when a 37-year-old man posing as a teenager on Roblox allegedly sexually abused and trafficked her before being arrested in Tennessee — the suit claims the platform acts as a digital hunting ground for predators. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Adam Sandler—known for his comedy movies—will add a stop in Des Moines to his 'You're My Best Friend' tour when he performs on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Casey’s Center. Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday and the tour—running from Sept. 5 to Nov. 1—is expected to draw many fans. KCCI
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists shared results from a two-year study on water quality at an event on Monday in Des Moines. The study found high nitrate levels from farm runoff and other pollutants—prompting experts to call for local, regional and state measures to clean the rivers. Iowa Public Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Polk County jury awarded Devin Michael Ellis $205,300 after it found he was fired from Storage and Design Group Inc. for complaining about racial discrimination, with his work from December 2021 to September 20 and a complaint filed in August 2022 — the employer has not yet commented. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Iowa Senator Grassley said he supports extending the retirement age for healthy pilots to help ease the growing airline pilot shortage and is considering lowering the required flight hours to become a pilot. He has not yet decided on allowing a single pilot to fly commercial jets— a proposal opposed by several lawmakers. Radio Iowa
- ➤ State Rep. J.D. Scholten, running for U.S. Senate, visited Griffieon Family Farm in Ankeny on August 4 to share his plan for a new Farm Bill that boosts competition and conservation — he said the changes will help Iowa farmers, improve water quality, and keep more money in local communities — a move he believes will strengthen regional food systems. - ➤ Des Moines City Council approved negotiations on August 4 for a 20-year lease with Joppa at the Chesterfield School property on east Des Moines to build a tiny home village for about 50 chronically homeless residents—modeled after Austin’s Community First! Village with support services included. City officials said rezoning and further approvals are needed before the project can move forward and that residents will pay rent between $295 and $495 per month. The Des Moines Register
