- ➤ On Saturday evening, a 34-year-old motorcyclist not wearing a helmet lost control and crashed into a concrete barrier near SE 30th Street and E. MLK, Jr Parkway in Des Moines—bystanders performed CPR until medics transported him to a local hospital where he died. WHO 13
- ➤ A car crash on Saturday evening in Delaware County killed 33-year-old Anthony Mentzer and 44-year-old Bobbi Bauers after a Volkswagen Beetle crossed the center line and struck a northbound Chevy at Highway 38 and 310th Avenue (near Hopkinton) (around 6:15 p.m.). WHO 13

- ➤ A Ford Focus lost control just after 3:30 p.m. Saturday near Highway 5 and 200th Avenue in Warren County — 16-year-old Donald McCormick died at the scene while driver Isabella Ashford was taken to a Des Moines hospital. WHO 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Former DMACC administrator Kim Jackson, who served 26 years and was fired on July 2 for saying she once pulled a knife during a staff meeting, is suing the college for alleged age and racial discrimination—she claims her firing was a pretext since her role was replaced by younger white colleagues. A judge ruled her comment did not amount to misconduct when she apologized two days later and awarded her unemployment benefits, and she now seeks unspecified damages. The Des Moines Register
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Des Moines City Council will hold a second vote today on raising the franchise fee on gas and electric bills from 5% to 7.5% to help cover DART’s funding gap amid disagreements among council members. The change would add about $2.50 per $100 on bills and could bring in up to $6.2 million over five years—helping meet long-term transit needs. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Iowa native astronaut Peggy Whitson led the Axiom-4 mission on the ISS that performed more than 60 experiments with a four-member crew from India, Hungary and Poland, and the crew returned safely after launching on June 25 and splashing down on July 15. She said the mission proved that working together can yield important scientific progress — a milestone that added to her record 695 days in space over five trips. Radio Iowa
