COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On July 26, the Des Moines Downtown Farmer’s Market celebrated its 50th anniversary by extending its hours from 7 a.m.—3:30 p.m.—a change that shows its growth from 15 vendors and 200 shoppers in 1976 to over 300 vendors attracting 30,000 visitors every Saturday from May to October.  WHO 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 49-year-old man went missing after falling off a dock into the Des Moines River Sunday morning—first responders used boats, sonar, and drones to search until hazardous conditions forced them to suspend efforts—and authorities plan to resume the search later.  KCCI

CRIME NEWS

  • Des Moines police are investigating two shooting incidents early Sunday morning— the first occurred just before 3 a.m. when a 31-year-old man with a leg gunshot wound arrived at Broadlawns Medical Center, gave a false name amid an active felony warrant and was taken into custody, while the second took place at 5 a.m. near the 2700 block of Euclid Avenue when a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his buttocks refused care and a crowd disturbance led to arrests for disorderly conduct and public intoxication.  WHO 13
  • Des Moines police investigated two shootings on Sunday morning; one incident just before 3 a.m. left a 50-year-old man with a leg wound at Broadlawns Medical Center who gave a false name & was taken to Polk County Jail, and an incident just after 5 a.m. at an after-hours party on Euclid Avenue left a 29-year-old man with a buttock injury who later received care at UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center as both cases remain under investigation.  KCCI
  • Before 4 a.m. on Sunday, July 27, Des Moines police chased driver David Gomez after he fled a routine traffic stop near Fremont and York Streets and crashed his Chevrolet Equinox through a tree and fence, and officials arrested him while one passenger was released and the other remains seriously injured.  The Des Moines Register

  • Seventeen-year-old Landon Olson from Indianola competed in the National Balloon Classic with his custom 'Reach for the Stars' balloon after light winds delayed the morning launch. He said flying in his hometown was a dream come true—he now enjoys the contest with family and friends.  KCCI

HEALTH NEWS

  • LifeServe will be at the Iowa State Fair every day from Aug. 7 to 17 and will collect blood on nine days while offering bus tours on Sundays and free reusable straws to those registered but deferred for health reasons. The blood mobile bus will be parked east of Thrill Town — near Gate 10 and south of the Varied Industries Building for extra donation opportunities during a time of increased summer trauma.  The Des Moines Register
