- ➤ Two Johnston students, Millie and Krish Sethi, run the PureKindness Foundation to assemble homemade first aid kits that they donate to local groups serving families, refugees, and people who are homeless. Since starting the organization last year, the siblings have provided more than 1,100 kits by obtaining supplies from MATTER — a global nonprofit. The Des Moines Register

CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Gemiere Cortez Goodwin (27) and Merrelita Rae Kintz (45) were arrested in connection with a violent home invasion in northwest Ankeny where Goodwin allegedly choked a 68-year-old victim before stealing a wallet, a .38 revolver, cash, and two cell phones while both face charges including attempted murder and burglary. - ➤ A RentCafe report named Des Moines the third-best metro for Gen Z college graduates with a score of 79 out of 100 based on six factors—like cost, livability and job growth. The study compared 264 metros and noted that the city ranks higher than major urban areas such as New York City, Denver and Chicago. The Des Moines Register
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Experts at Iowa State Mosquito Surveillance say that although mosquitoes seem worse this summer, numbers are actually lower than last year as heavy rains create more breeding spots. Des Moines has stopped spraying due to budget cuts while Urbandale will continue spraying through the fall — urging residents to clear gutters and stagnant water to reduce mosquito breeding. - ➤ Ankeny's Nash Keen was born at 21 weeks and weighed 10 ounces on July 5th at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital. Now 1 year old, he holds the Guinness World Record for the most premature baby and spent 189 days in the hospital—he is doing remarkably well. The Des Moines Register
