ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A two-vehicle crash injured five people in Polk County on Sunday morning at NW 112th Street and Highway 163—one vehicle rolled down an embankment and became submerged after pulling out in front of a Buick Enclave, and the Honda driver was rescued and flown to a local hospital while four Buick occupants received treatment for minor injuries.  WHO 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Des Moines Police said one man died and another was detained after a shooting occurred on the 200 block of Bell Avenue in the Indianola Hills neighborhood early Tuesday morning+officers quickly responded to a 911 call received at 12:45 a.m. near Gray’s Lake and began investigating the scene.  WHO 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Visitors at the Iowa State Fair will sample 36 new drinks from Aug. 7-17, including 26 alcohol-free options like Pickle State Fair Lemonade and 10 alcoholic choices such as Pink Pony Cooler brewed by Barn Town + fairgoers will vote for their favorite drink on Aug. 15.  The Des Moines Register

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Iowa families will face higher energy bills as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act phases out energy tax credits, with estimates showing an increase of about $100 per year by the end of the decade and $350 by 2035. The report from Energy Innovation Policy and Technology warns that rising wholesale costs and job losses may follow — impacting both consumers and the state economy.  The Des Moines Register

  • Homeland Security has begun removal proceedings for central Iowa residents Justin and Victoria Kokeh after they sued to force a decision on their five-year delayed naturalization, with officials alleging the couple lied about having children during their 2013 visa interview—if the action continues, their naturalization process will not resume.  The Des Moines Register
  • Federal officials are moving to deport Justin and Victoria Kokeh after alleging they lied about having no children during their 2013 visa interviews— the couple sued Homeland Security after waiting five years for a decision on their naturalization application.  Iowa Public Radio
  • The city will begin lane reductions on Fleur Drive next week when crews start resurfacing between George Flagg Parkway and W MLK Parkway starting Monday, July 28; the project is set to finish before October 15. Drivers may use detours via MLK, Jr. Parkway, Bell Avenue, Thomas Beck Road, SW 9th Street and SW 7th Street — access to Gray’s Lake Park and Water Works Park will remain during regular park hours.  WHO 13
  • A federal judge issued an order on Monday—halting 11 parts of Iowa’s new law on pharmacy benefit managers for the companies that filed a lawsuit while the law stays active for other firms, a decision that impacts groups like the Iowa Bankers Benefit Plan and more than 600 members of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.  The Gazette
