  • Des Moines Police’s Bomb Squad responded when a golfer discovered an IED at Waveland Golf Course Thursday afternoon and evacuated the area while the bomb squad safely detonated the live device near hole 8—golfers returned later as officials worked with the ATF to investigate possible prank-related motives—.  KDSM 17
  • West Des Moines police are investigating the death of an 18-month-old child who was found unresponsive in a car at 5901 Westown Parkway on July 2nd at 2:51 p.m.—the child was taken to a hospital where it was later pronounced dead, and investigators say evidence shows the event was isolated with no threat to anyone else.  WHO 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Monday morning, a preview flight for the National Balloon Classic lifted off from Water Works Park in Des Moines a little after 6:30 a.m.—the balloons were seen drifting toward Ankeny while the nine-day event in Indianola is set to run from July 25 through August 2.  WHO 13
  • The Iowa State Fair will run from Aug. 7 through Aug. 17 at the fairgrounds on East 30th Street and East University Avenue, featuring concerts, rides, and nearly 70 new foods. Advance tickets offer discounted prices until Aug. 6—attendees must purchase both fair admission and grandstand tickets for live shows.  The Des Moines Register

  • A rising sophomore from Waukee High School went to the FBI Youth Leadership Program in Washington in late June as one of 64 students for eight days of classes, physical training, and field trips. Her sheriff father Adam Infante (who finished the FBI’s National Academy in 2018) gave her practical advice like where to find frozen yogurt to help her manage the rigorous schedule.  WHO 13

  • Des Moines leaders are set to finalize a new housing strategy tonight amid concerns that rising home values could lead to higher rent and property taxes for low-income residents. Mayor Connie Boesen supports the plan with extra funding for programs like Invest DSM — while experts warn that the strategy may overlook other tools needed to keep housing affordable.  Radio Iowa
  • Farmer and land appraiser Kyle Larsen of Humboldt has launched his campaign for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District to focus on faith, family and farm—he said he will seek a seat on the U.S. House Agriculture Committee to give Iowa farmers a stronger voice.  The Des Moines Register
  • An Iowa mother sued an Illinois lab after a false positive from her umbilical cord nearly cost her custody of her two sons and triggered child protective services intervention before follow-up tests and a retest by the Attorney General confirmed no drugs, and her lawsuit filed in April and later transferred to federal court alleges negligence, defamation & invasion of privacy while the lab denies any wrongdoing.  The Des Moines Register
