- ➤ At the Dallas County Fair on July 10 in Adel, 4-H and FFA members took part in beef shows and mutton busting events, while children competed in pie eating contests, bubble gum blowing competitions and enjoyed carnival rides and face painting. - ➤ Des Moines police arrested Michael James Valento, 41, after he allegedly set off a pipe bomb at Waveland Golf Course on July 3 — he now faces charges that include having an explosive with intent, first- and third-degree arson, and using a firearm by a domestic abuser. KCCI
- ➤ Police charged 41-year-old Michael James Valento after a live pipe bomb was found at Waveland Golf Course on Thursday afternoon—he is accused of detonating a similar device on July 3 and the course was evacuated with no injuries. WHO 13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported that 14 state beaches are not recommended for swimming because water samples exceeded safety limits for E. coli & algae. The agency also noted that water quality has improved at three beaches that were removed from the list while one remains off limits during lake renovations. The Des Moines Register

- ➤ Lawyers filed a new state lawsuit on June 3 accusing Gov. Kim Reynolds and Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend of unlawfully ending pandemic jobless benefits in 2021 for between 30,000 and 55,000 Iowans—claiming the move violated state Employment Security law. - ➤ Governor Kim Reynolds said at a groundbreaking near the Italian American Cultural Center that regulation is not the answer to high nitrate levels in drinking water—she called it a killer of innovation and noted that her office is working with water utilities and farmers to boost voluntary conservation practices, even as protesters linked pollution to high cancer rates.
