- ➤ Nine-year-old Henry Menninga received the National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion Award yesterday at the state Capitol—he was honored for his work in voter education and community service. He has promoted voter education since age 4 and also gives away 40 to 50 care packages a year to homeless Iowans while leading cleanups at McHenry Park in Des Moines. KCCI
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Des Moines police arrested 41-year-old Tyler Jon Watsabaugh after he led officers on a chase on Tuesday night near Indianola Road and SE 14th Street and then barricaded himself in a home on the 4500 block of SE 15th Street—residents safely left the home as police used CS gas after hours of negotiation. - ➤ Des Moines police arrested an unidentified (41-year-old) suspect after a traffic stop for an equipment violation escalated into a 7-hour standoff when he fled, barricaded himself in a house, armed himself with a makeshift spear and threatened officers, leading to tear gas being used and a fire breaking out that is under investigation. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Des Moines Public Schools presented a revised bond plan — cutting the original $500 million, 10-year proposal in half — to fund flexible learning spaces, full-day pre-school, a regional school system, and career programs over 5 years. The district must collect 7,500 signatures and secure 60 percent voter approval for the November referendum while closing three schools and an administration building. WHO 13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The state and partners launched a $1.94 million project to reduce nitrate runoff in the Beaver Creek Watershed, a 380 square mile area draining into the Des Moines River that serves over 600,000 customers. The funds will be used over the next three years to finance conservation measures such as restoring oxbows—helping filter runoff and improve water quality. Radio Iowa
