- ➤ Anna Campos, mother of Ema Cardenas who was killed in a hit-and-run in April 2022, started Simply Loved to support first-generation teen girls and will launch Ema’s Closet — a mobile service providing clothes and necessities — at the Downtown Hampton Inn on July 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. WHO 13
- ➤ Furry Friends Refuge has returned the animals that were moved ahead of West Des Moines’ fireworks display—staff relocated all animals to keep them safe from the loud explosions and falling debris. The shelter's executive director said the display was moved from across the street to directly in front of the shelter, which caused extra work and safety concerns. WHO 13
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A house fire broke out in a southside duplex at the 2100 block of East Caulder on July 6 at 5:30 p.m.—caused by an accidental ignition when a family had reentered the home—and crews put out the flames 30 minutes later with no injuries reported. WHO 13

- ➤ DMPD say a person injured by gunfire in the River Bend neighborhood on Saturday night died after being taken to a hospital — the shooting came after a hit-and-run crash on 2nd Avenue with officers arriving just before 9 p.m. near Ohio Street and University Avenue. WHO 13
- ➤ On July 5, the Des Moines Police Department received reports of a scammer posing as an officer who called from a 515 area code, threatened arrest for missed jury duty, and demanded cash payments—police stressed that they never call to request money. The Des Moines Register
