CRIME NEWS

  • A shooting in the River Bend neighborhood on Saturday just before 9 p.m. left one person injured who was taken to a local hospital while Des Moines police detained a potential suspect—investigators say the incident may be linked to an earlier hit-and-run crash near 2nd Avenue and Hull Avenue.  KCCI
  • Des Moines police said that a 41-year-old man was shot during a holiday party on the south side at the 2000 block of Meadow Chase Lane and taken to a hospital—officers responded just before 12:30 a.m. Saturday when a crowd of over 50 people fought and five individuals were arrested for disorderly conduct.  KCCI
  • The Des Moines Police Department detained one person after they responded to reports of gunshots at Ohio Street and University Avenue just before 9 p.m. in the River Bend neighborhood—one person was injured and taken to a local hospital while police said the incident may be linked to an earlier hit-and-run investigation at 2nd Avenue and Hull Avenue.  WHO 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the 34th Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals is underway at the Iowa State Fairgrounds—drawing an expected 30,000 visitors to see over 5,000 retro cars during Independence Day weekend. Dalton Dreesen built a 1957 Thunderbird and a 1967 Chevelle that won awards, and car registration continues today.  WHO 13
  • On July 5, locals gathered at the Iowa State Fairgrounds for the Goodguys 34th Speedway Motors Heartland Nationals where classic cars, hot rods, and a tire-smokin’ burnout competition thrilled fans—spectators took photos and enjoyed the lively, rain-soaked event.  The Des Moines Register

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A West Des Moines man, William Rogers, won $100,000 after he picked his own Powerball numbers at his wife’s request and bought his ticket at Hy-Vee on Grand Avenue—he matched four white balls plus the Powerball and said the win will help him buy new furniture and boost his savings.  WHO 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Des Moines Firefighters said the Fire Chief will recommend removing one fire engine from Station 8 in the southside during a City Council meeting tomorrow to save funds. Union leader Joe Van Halen said the change may increase workloads at other stations and stressed the need for better station placement—especially as the city’s population shifts.  WHO 13
