CRIME NEWS

  • A 57-year-old Ohio man, Christopher Webb, was arrested after posting an Instagram video outside the American Equity Life Insurance building in West Des Moines in which he expressed anger at his insurer and questioned if he would blow up the building—he later admitted his actions were intended to gain Instagram followers and he now faces a threat of terrorism charge.  KCCI
  • A pedestrian died after being hit on the median of a busy intersection in Des Moines at 8 PM last night when a 2020 Dodge Ram struck him and fled the scene—police have questioned the adult male driver with no charges filed, marking the city’s seventh traffic fatality this year.  Radio Iowa
  • The family of Courtany Mundy-Gonzalez is seeking answers more than a year after she was killed in a shooting at Ashworth Park in Des Moines.  The Des Moines Register
  • A man died from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run crash Monday night in the Merle Hay neighborhood when he was struck near the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Hickman Road — police said witnesses reported he was on a median and authorities later located the 2020 Dodge Ram on 44th Street and identified an adult male driver who fled the scene.  WHO 13
  • West Des Moines police are asking for help finding 16-year-old Damarianna James-Graham who was last seen on June 20 in the Des Moines metro and is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall with brown eyes and brown/black hair - officers believe she is not in danger and ask anyone with information to call Westcom at 515-222-3321 or contact local law enforcement.  KCCI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WHO 13 Cares partnered with Vibrant Insurance and United Way of Central Iowa to collect essential hygiene products for DMPS students. The drop-off drive was held Friday at Kurtz Opportunity Center and over 951 items were donated while 288 kits were assembled—these will be distributed on Monday to help ease hardships for many families.  KDSM 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Des Moines raised parking fines in May to help offset lost revenue, yet the city now faces a shortfall because far fewer people are parking downtown than before the pandemic — leaving officials concerned about the gap in income.  The Des Moines Register

  • The owner of a private road told Raccoon Valley Little League they must stop using the only route to their ballfields by December 31—forcing the league, which has spent $150,000 on field improvements, to find an alternative access.
