ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials say that nitrate levels remain high in central Iowa waterways that supply Des Moines drinking water, so the ban on lawn watering for 600,000 customers will continue—expected to last for weeks as treatment plants work to filter out chemicals. • Central Iowa Water Works announced that declining nitrate levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers will allow metro splash pads to reopen today with limited hours—though the lawn watering ban remains in effect to safeguard treatment plants—after last week's closures aimed at reducing water consumption.  WHO 13
  • Local companies are busy as nitrate levels in Central Iowa drinking water remain near historic highs, driving residents to install reverse osmosis filters for safer water. Central Iowa Water Works confirmed Tuesday that high nitrate levels will continue for several weeks and that it will add new treatment at the Saylorville plant as part of a seven-year plan—measures designed to protect community health.  WHO 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, many Iowa banks such as West Bank & Bank Iowa, the U.S. Postal Service, and Des Moines Public Libraries are closed to observe Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in Texas; several retailers remain open and garbage pickup will follow its normal schedule.
