  • Deal’s Orchard in Jefferson draws thousands each fall as the Deal family prepares the farm in spring and summer by planting apple trees and growing corn, tomatoes, pumpkins, flowers, and Christmas trees—while they also brew hard cider that will feature a new Strawberry Lemonade flavor this summer.  WHO 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Celebrations for Juneteenth will take place across the Des Moines area with events planned on June 14, including a hike at Fort Des Moines Park and a presentation at the public library, and further activities on June 19 such as a film screening at Fleur Cinema and a tea at Grand View University Student Center. Organizers offer both free and ticketed events — inviting local residents to honor a day marking the end of slavery — while providing diverse ways to participate in the holiday.  The Des Moines Register
  • On June 9, the Des Moines Heritage Trust released its third annual list naming seven historic buildings at risk of demolition or damage — two of which reappeared from the 2023 list — to urge locals to help preserve these irreplaceable landmarks.  The Des Moines Register

  • Des Moines metro is the fastest-growing large area in the Midwest, with a 6.3% population increase from 2020 through 2024 driven by in-state migration and expanding service and technology jobs.   • Central Iowa Water Works has banned 600,000 water customers from watering lawns effective immediately due to high nitrate levels in the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers—customers who violate the ban risk having their water service disconnected until the crisis is managed.  The Des Moines Register

  • Luke Hoffman—executive director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition—discusses how cycling helped him adjust to his new life in Des Moines after his move.  The Des Moines Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • ADM baseball had a mixed week as it won 2-1 against top-ranked Van Meter with key hits by Lauren Hagedorn and Aniston Tollari but also lost 8-2 in a 12-inning game on June 6 — while ADM softball improved its ranking with a 2-1 extra inning win over defending champs Van Meter on June 5 after a 10-2 loss to Norwalk.  The Des Moines Register
  • Van Meter boys soccer advanced to the state title game but lost in overtime on June6, finishing as state runners-up after a streak of five scoreless games. The baseball team won an 8-2 game over ADM on June4 in a 13-inning marathon, recording 23 strikeouts— the highest this season.  The Des Moines Register
