Good morning, Des Moines. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 10th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • A Des Moines man, Justin Sabo, is accused of breaking into a woman's home and attacking her with a hammer—she had a no-contact order—and police say she was hit several times in the face and head while a hammer was found at the scene, and he faces five charges as he remains in Polk County Jail.  KCCI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Des Moines ranked 11th on U.S. News & World Report's list of 26 best underrated travel destinations for 2025, based on user votes, staff picks, and local attractions. The city also saw its Best Places to Live ranking drop from fourth to 55th while nearby Ankeny and West Des Moines ranked higher.  The Des Moines Register

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Des Moines Public Schools has added three new free lunch sites to its summer meals program, raising the total to 31 locations (including several apartment complexes) as state funds helped purchase tables, chairs and tents. Lunch will be served Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from June 9 until August 15, with closures on June 19 and July 4.  The Des Moines Register
  • According to a new report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Iowa ranked 9th in overall child well-being but saw declines in education measures, with fewer fourth-graders proficient in reading and fewer eighth-graders proficient in math. Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law effective July 1 to boost math education — the new initiative will introduce early screening and personalized help for struggling students.  The Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Iowa recorded 98 tornadoes in April and May 2024 but has seen only four tornadoes in those months this year—May marked the first month since 2010 without any tornadoes and June storms have produced one near Fort Madison. A meteorologist said the lack of Gulf moisture and a shifting jet stream may limit tornado activity today though more severe weather could occur later this season.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Reynolds is nearly deciding on a bill that would limit carbon pipeline developers from using eminent domain to seize land and she has until Saturday to sign or veto the legislation—she also signed bills on Friday that impose Medicaid work requirements, expand benefits for firefighters and police officers with cancer, and introduce new school policies on extracurricular activities and fetal development.  Radio Iowa
  • Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a law on June 6 that will require tens of thousands of Iowans on the Health and Wellness Plan to work 80 hours a month (or join a job skills program) to keep their coverage. The law will go into effect on July 1 if federal approval comes through and is expected to reduce enrollment from about 171,000 to 131,000 over the next five years.  The Des Moines Register

SPORTS NEWS

  • Saturday's Bacoon Ride will take a detour around the fire-damaged Raccoon River Valley Trail bridge in Adel after the blaze on May 12 closed the structure.
