  • Isaiah 117 House held a community kickoff event at Indian Hills Junior High on Sunday to raise awareness for foster children in need and outline plans for building a transitional home for kids awaiting permanent placements. The nonprofit will hold monthly meetings starting June 23rd at Urbandale Public Library—these gatherings will guide its efforts—and will focus on raising awareness over the next six months.  WHO 13

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A devastating house fire on May 21 left three Des Moines residents dead, including 72-year-old Yuliana Ndayirorere, 3-year-old Angela Peniel, and 18-year-old Nshimillimana Shannella — hundreds gathered Saturday for a memorial service as community members and nonprofit Genesis Foundation offered support.  KCCI

  • Firework season is starting in Des Moines as a new law signed by Governor Reynolds on May 14 allows cities to not restrict fireworks on July 3rd and 4th—boosting business for local retailers who report early customer interest. HEALTH NEWS

  • UnityPoint Health held its annual Nurse Camp at Iowa Methodist Medical Center over the weekend, where seventh and eighth grade students learned bedside, anatomy, and lab skills and became eligible for first aid and CPR certification—organizers said the next camp will be held on July 31 and Aug. 1 with registration fees of $75 or $10 for students on free and reduced lunch.  KCCI
