- ➤ Iowans gathered Friday to honor U.S. Army Pvt. James Harrington—killed on D-Day—as his remains were identified and returned to Cincinnati for burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The service marked exactly 81 years after his death and paid tribute to a true American hero. KCCI
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Iowa DNR reported that high E. coli levels were found at 5 state-owned swimming beaches this week, making them unsafe for swimming. The department will keep updating test results until Labor Day — urging residents to check current water conditions before heading out. The Des Moines Register
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal appeals court upheld lower court rulings that bar Story and Shelby counties from setting extra safety rules on Summit Carbon Solutions’ carbon sequestration pipeline. The court said that only federal pipeline safety rules apply — local rules on setbacks and emergency response measures are not allowed while an additional Story County ordinance will be reviewed. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A report shows that many Iowa nursing homes did not have enough staff last year, with eight of 410 facilities operating with at least 40% fewer nurses than needed. The analysis (by the nonprofit LTCCC) also found many homes provided far fewer registered nurse hours than recommended, and Congress is considering delaying new staffing standards. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ Healthy Kids Iowa, a new state summer feeding program that replaces Summer EBT, began distributing $40 worth of nutritious food per eligible child through 258 sites managed by six food banks—families can pick up food once a month in June, July and August. The Des Moines Register
