- ➤ Woodward Friends and Neighbors Day begins today with a beef burger supper at Woodward Christian Church at 5 p.m., followed by the Little Mister and Miss Woodward Contest at 6 p.m. and live music by Royce Johns from 7 to 10 p.m. On Saturday, the celebration includes a 5K run at 8 a.m., a Main Street parade at 10 a.m., a car show with food donations, a tractor show, and family games (Sunday features a church service at 9 a.m. to close the weekend). - ➤ Two motorcycle crashes were under investigation when one rider, 66-year-old Ruby May Golnick, died after her bike was hit by a semi in Floyd County—while in Des Moines a car and a motorcycle collided, killing an unidentified motorcyclist and injuring the car’s driver. Radio Iowa

- ➤ The Des Moines Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle and car crash on the city’s south side near Blank Park Zoo that occurred Wednesday at about 6:30 p.m.—the motorcyclist died at the scene while the car driver was injured and two passengers were unharmed. WHO 13

- ➤ Des Moines' Capital City Pride festival begins today after several big companies pulled their support and small businesses stepped in to cover the gap—director Wes Mullins said the budget remains balanced while Pride celebrations in other cities face shortfalls. KCCI

- ➤ Hoover High banned phones in class and Bergman Academy required students to check them in at the start of the day, which led to higher grades — over 55% As and Bs—and fewer suspensions while boosting classroom engagement. Both school leaders expect other districts to see similar improvements this school year as they follow Governor Kim Reynolds’s new state law. WHO 13

- ➤ Volunteers are needed to help compile Iowa’s Bumble Bee Atlas, a study that tracks bumble bee populations to support research on pollination. Training events start on June 21st in Peosta and will continue through July in other parts of Iowa—registration is free and pre-registration is required. Radio Iowa

- ➤ Polk County supervisors approved a year-long pilot program that will pay county employees a bonus of 10% of first-year savings up to $5,000 for ideas that cut spending plus the program will begin with a $25,000 pilot for fiscal year 2026 starting July 1, while some supervisors worry it could create tension among employees. - ➤ ADM girls soccer advanced to the state semifinals after Jada Grove scored her 100th goal in a 1-1 match against Independence and will now face top-seeded Waverly-Shell Rock — ADM baseball earned wins over Creston with Jaxson Book striking out seven, the softball team split a doubleheader in Boone with a 6-2 loss and a 13-1 win, and boys soccer ended its season with a 2-0 loss.
