COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction on the new Reichardt Community Recreation Center on Des Moines' north side is progressing well after ground broke last October; community feedback has shaped the 36,000-square-foot project originally planned as a $22 million vision and now including a gym, workout area, kitchen, indoor pool and indoor walking track. The center is scheduled to open in Spring 2026 and will deliver unique amenities for local residents.  KCCI

  • Former owners of Adventureland Park reached a confidential settlement with the family whose 11-year-old son died and 15-year-old son was seriously injured when a water raft ride flipped on July 3rd, 2021 — the trial in Polk County was cancelled by the agreement.  The Gazette
  • Today, wet roads have led to multiple crashes in Des Moines as emergency responders dealt with a vehicle that hydroplaned into the median on I-235 at 28th Street—blocking westbound lanes—and another crash that has closed the right shoulder on the SW Connector along IA 5, while drivers face detours near a roundabout under construction.  KCCI

  • Jeremy Parsons has been named CEO of the Iowa State Fair and will lead his third fair with a lifelong deep connection to the event. He has worked at the fair since childhood—first as a summer employee and later as a county fair director—and he now plans to boost agricultural education, safety and year-round business.  The Des Moines Register

  • The Des Moines Public School district honored former public safety manager Doug Richardson by dedicating the first Stop the Bleed cabinet at East High School on Monday. Richardson helped add Narcan and AEDs to more than 60 buildings and vehicles — a tribute his family and colleagues say reflects his lifelong commitment to safety.  WHO 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Iowa high school students aged 14 to 19 can sign up for a free summer membership at Planet Fitness gyms, including four in the Des Moines area—teens under 18 need a parent to sign a waiver before joining.
