COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new online tool called eQuipHub will launch later this month to help Iowa foster families get essential items quickly when children are placed in care. Traci Schermerhorn of Foster SQUAD said the system will start in several central Iowa counties & expand statewide over time.  Radio Iowa

CRIME NEWS

  • Diana Lynn Becker-Abeyta pleaded guilty to dependent adult abuse and entered an Alford plea for involuntary manslaughter in the death of 73-year-old Ray Crammond—who was found malnourished and neglected—and was sentenced on May 29 to 30 years in prison with a $150,000 restitution order.  The Des Moines Register
  • Today, a free documentary called Jackpot shows the $20 million lottery scam that hit central Iowa 15 years ago — the film, produced with former Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich, is now streaming on YouTube starting at 9 a.m.  KCCI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The May survey of supply managers showed tariffs pushed Iowa’s manufacturing growth index from 53 in April to 51, and about 35% of businesses changed their import sourcing—further signaling slowing progress in the region. Creighton University economist Ernie Goss said these trends may lead to a short-term rate cut at the Federal Reserve meetings scheduled for June 17th and 18th.  Radio Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two seniors from Southeast Warren Jr-Sr High School and North Polk High School tied for the Des Moines Register Student of the Week poll. The poll gathered nominations from staff at 30 local schools in Polk, Dallas and Warren counties during the 2024-25 school year.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Access to Highway 415 from Northwest Beaver Drive near Saylorville Lake was closed on June 2 for roundabout construction that forces drivers to take detour routes adding extra miles to their trip. The work, which includes new pavement and drainage systems, will continue until the end of August—motorists are advised to plan ahead.  The Des Moines Register
  • The trial began Monday, June 2 at the Polk County Historic Courthouse as the Jaramillo family’s lawsuit against Adventure Lands of America Inc. and former CEO Michael Krantz for the 2021 death of their 11-year-old son on the Raging River ride entered its three-week phase—after nearly four years of delays and dismissals consolidated the case.   The Des Moines Register
  • Gov. Kim Reynolds signed new election laws on June 2 that let poll workers ask voters about their citizenship and ban ranked-choice voting — the law also changes recount procedures by assigning county auditors and setting stricter thresholds for recount requests to address recent voting challenges.  The Des Moines Register
