  • Victoria the addax calf was born to parents Adeline and Po on May 7 at Des Moines' Blank Park Zoo as part of the zoo's diamond jubilee celebration + she can be seen daily in the Jamaa Kwa Africa section with the giraffes.  The Des Moines Register

CULTURE NEWS

  • Iowans may see a blue micromoon tonight if clear skies let the full moon appear smaller from being far from Earth; the event will be visible into early Sunday morning.  Radio Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, May 29, the Iowa DNR reported that three state beaches exhibited high E. coli or algae levels - a drop from four flagged last week - with two now deemed safe and two remaining closed; the department tests 39 state beaches ahead of Memorial Day weekend.  The Des Moines Register
  • Des Moines metro cities trimmed splash pad hours to curb outdoor water use after Central Iowa Water Works urged residents to cut usage by 50% to protect nitrate treatment. Ankeny, Des Moines, Urbandale and others now operate reduced schedules starting today.  The Des Moines Register

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa’s Department of Health and Human Services canceled EBT cards for 5,554 SNAP recipients on May 29 but has issued new cards that should arrive in 5-7 days; customers are advised not to request a replacement if already issued one.  The Des Moines Register
  • Des Moines will see dozens of downtown streets closed for the Dam to DSM half marathon and Downtown Farmers’ Market. Locust Street (between Second and Robert D. Ray Drive) closes Friday at 8 a.m. while additional roads shut Saturday at 4 a.m. with reopenings by 2 p.m.  The Des Moines Register
  • HUD Secretary Scott Turner visited central Iowa yesterday, touring a Habitat for Humanity community in Waukee where 48 new affordable homes were under construction. He met with local leaders and Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Indianola's downtown square to spotlight bipartisan efforts to ease housing regulations & boost new construction.  KCCI
