  • Des Moines dedicated a memorial walking trail at Glendale Cemetery on Wednesday to honor fallen Sgt. Tony Beminio, who was killed in 2016. Family, friends and fellow officers gathered to remember his service — a tribute to his enduring courage.  KCCI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • American Equity Insurance has opened its new headquarters in downtown after moving from West Des Moines for more space. Company leaders cut the ribbon at the former Nationwide Insurance building on Locust Street — located across from the Des Moines Public Library.  KCCI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marty Lonn Larson, known as Muffy Rosenberg, died on May 13 at age 62. He was a beloved drag performer in the East Village who mentored younger talent and hosted local shows — his unique legacy inspires the community.  The Des Moines Register
  • Des Moines Con will host a Firefly reunion panel with four original stars on Saturday at the Iowa Events Center downtown plus autograph sessions, photo-ops, and costume contests, with other TV show reunions available as well. The event runs through Sunday.  Radio Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today at the Des Moines Civic Center, 650 high school theater students from over 108 schools perform in the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase (streamed live on IowaPBS.org), with two triple threat winners set to advance to a national showcase in New York City on June 22.  Radio Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Iowa DNR forestor Mark Vitosh noted that red and white oak trees have dropped by half over 35 years due to disease, drought and changing temperatures, and he urges landowners to work with professional foresters to develop long-term management plans.  Radio Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The final group of Iowa National Guard soldiers, 135 of the Second Brigade Combat Team, will arrive tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at the 132nd Air Wing (the event is closed to the public due to security) while 45 others will be welcomed later in Council Bluffs at 3:30 p.m.  Radio Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medicaid cuts from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act may force closures or reduced services at up to 400 hospitals nationwide, three of which in Iowa include Ottumwa Regional Health Center, CHI Health Mercy (Council Bluffs) and MercyOne Oelwein Medical Center, potentially affecting low-income Medicaid patients and prompting staff layoffs.  The Des Moines Register

  • The Financial Center in downtown Des Moines is reopening as Mezzo on Walnut after an $80 million renovation has turned most floors into upscale apartments; an opening ceremony is planned early June and full completion is expected by fall.  KDSM 17
