- ➤ Construction on the new terminal at Des Moines International Airport continued on May 28 as Executive Director Brian Mulcahy provided a progress update+the project is on track to meet planned milestones. The Des Moines Register
- ➤ There is one week left to vote in the Coolest Thing Made in Iowa Contest, hosted by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry and Midwest One Bank. Four finalists — including Viking Pump, Moose Fireplace Grill, Country Maid and John Deere — will be judged with the winner announced at a conference on June 11. WHO 13
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 16-year-old teen pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after pushing a youth shelter worker whose head hit concrete and he will be sentenced in July when he turns 18 with up to 20 years in prison — his transfer from juvenile to adult court and additional charges for interfering with police are also noted — while the victim’s daughters continue to seek closure. - ➤ Des Moines City Councilman Mike Simonson announced his reelection bid yesterday—he, a retired architect who won a special election in 2024, said he will focus on addressing homelessness by planning a permanent warming and cooling shelter and more supportive housing units if elected for a full term. - ➤ Golf pros, amateurs, and spectators are at Wakonda Club on the south side of Des Moines for the Principal Charity Classic, with a Pro-Am tournament on Wednesday and Thursday where a hole-in-one on the 17th hole wins a golf trip. The professional tournament will start Friday and continue through the weekend, offering $25 tickets, free entry for kids, and a junior sports experience on Saturday + supporting several children’s charities. - ➤ At the state meet on May 24, the Woodward-Granger Hawks set new school records when Hayden Thomas ran the sprint in 12.45 seconds and her teammates posted personal bests in relay events; the esports team finished third after a 7-0 regular season and led the state with 21 wins.
